Why mobile catering software is different from restaurant software

Most hospitality software is built for a fixed location with a reliable broadband connection, a dedicated kitchen with a separate front-of-house, and a customer who is seated and expecting to wait 20 minutes. None of that describes a food van at a market or festival.

Mobile catering software needs to handle fundamentally different constraints. Your connection might be 4G on a field. Your “till” might be a tablet bungee-corded to the serving counter. Your customers have been standing in a queue and just want their food. And you might not trade again for two weeks.

Eventifood is built around the real experience of running a UK food van: the QR code goes on the side of the vehicle, the menu loads on the customer's phone before they reach you, the order appears on your screen the moment it's paid, and the customer is notified the instant it's ready. The hatch becomes a collection point rather than an order-taking bottleneck.

The business model is also different. Restaurant software charges you whether you're open or closed. Festival season runs April to October; Christmas markets add November and December. If you're not trading in January and February, a fixed monthly subscription is money wasted. Eventifood charges 2% per transaction — so your software cost tracks your revenue, not the calendar.

A real example:

A food van trading 40 weekends a year at £800 average would pay £640 in Eventifood fees across the year. On a comparable subscription product at £79/month, they'd pay £948 — for 12 months, including the months they didn't trade. That's £308 of pure difference in favour of PAYG.

Most mobile catering software charges you 12 months a year. Eventifood doesn't.

Mobile caterers trade seasonally — festivals in summer, Christmas markets in winter, quiet months in between. Eventifood's PAYG pricing means your bill reflects your trading. When you're not earning, you're not paying.

Mobile catering software — questions answered

What is mobile catering software and do I need it?

+

It handles the digital operations of your food van or mobile catering unit — ordering, payments, kitchen management, customer notifications, and analytics. If you're still shouting orders across a van and counting cash at the end of the night, software like Eventifood will save you time, reduce mistakes, and let you serve more customers per hour.

How much does mobile catering software cost in the UK?

+

Eventifood is free to start. You pay 2% per transaction when orders come through. Most other UK mobile catering software costs £50–150/month, charged whether or not you trade. If you have 3 quiet months a year, that's £150–450 you'd pay Eventifood nothing for.

Does it work at outdoor events with no WiFi?

+

Yes. The platform runs on 4G with no on-site WiFi required. We've seen it running reliably in a field at a festival with 10,000 attendees. The menu, payments, and kitchen board all work on a standard mobile data connection.

Can I create separate menus for different catering events?

+

Yes. You can create a dedicated event menu for any booking — different prices, different items, different branding. Switch it live before the event starts, switch back to your standard menu when it's done. You can run a wedding menu one weekend and a festival menu the next without any overlap.

Does the software handle catering for large numbers?

+

It handles volume well. The kitchen board shows every order the moment it's paid. There's no theoretical limit to the number of concurrent orders — the platform has handled 300+ orders in a single event hour for food trucks at busy festivals. The constraint is how fast you can cook, not how fast the software can process.

What analytics does it provide for food van management?

+

Top-selling items by quantity and revenue, sales by hour (so you can see exactly when your rush hits), daily revenue totals, gross and net profit per item when cost prices are entered, and wastage over time. Most traders find within a few weeks that the data tells them something actionable — usually which item to stop making.

Can I use it on a Raspberry Pi or cheap tablet?

+

Yes. We test on a £49 Amazon Fire, a Raspberry Pi 4 with touchscreen, and a battered Android phone as backup. If it has a browser, it works. The kitchen board is specifically designed to work on small screens — you don't need a large monitor.

Is there a free trial or demo?

+

There's no trial period — you can sign up for free and use the full platform. Because there's no monthly fee on PAYG, there's nothing to trial. Just register, build your menu, and your store is live. You can also book a 20-minute live demo via our contact page.
